We were doing so good . . . from 1959 to 1973 when the poverty rate in the United States dropped from 22.4% to 11%. In 1980, the U.S. ranked second in the world for human development.
But then . . .since 1959, the poverty rate in the United States has never dipped below 10%. Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Sweden, Netherlands, Japan, Finland, and France have all surpassed the U.S. when it comes to human development and well being.
Now . . .39.8 million Americans live in poverty . . . that was about $22,025 for a family of four in 2008. Children, African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians are carrying most of the burden.
Locally . . .11.7% of Kansans, and 17.4% of Kansan children live in poverty.
