Resources for Medical Assistance |
|
All Kansans need and deserve good health care. The benefits of good health coverage include lower costs when medical conditions are treated early, less absenteeism from work or school, fewer emergency room visits, and lower insurance rates for everyone. Unfortunately, not all Kansans have access to affordable health care. The resources listed below are meant to change that by providing resources for low-cost or even free health care and prescription coverage. Keep in mind that once you've received approval for any of these programs, you'll most likely need to reapply every year.

Resources for Food Assistance |
|
There are two types of hunger: starvation and malnutrition. Starvation occurs when the body does not receive enough calories to maintain itself. Relatively few people actually die of starvation in the United States. Malnutrition is more common in the United States and it occurs when an individual gets enough calories, but his or her diet is limited to just three or four foods.
Malnutrition perpetuates a cycle of poverty because a person who is malnourished doesn't receive all of the vitamins and minerals needed for proper physical and mental development and maintenance. These nutritional deficiencies eventually lead to much larger and more expensive health issues: diabetes, heart disease, poor vision, obesity, skin diseases, and more. Nutritional deficiencies also lead to a poor ability to learn in school, and little energy or motivation to handle the responsibilities of life such as work, children, family, and more.
There is no reason for anyone to go hungry or to be malnourished in southwest Kansas. The resources below provide direction for (1) immediate and (2) extended food assistance.

Resources for Housing Assistance |
|
Housing, a place to eat, sleep, and be protected from the elements, is a basic requirement for human dignity. The hidden homeless include those whose housing costs consume too much of their income, those who must live in others' housing, and those who live in inadequate and unsafe housing. Resources for homelessness, low-income housing, one-time rental assistance, and weatherization programs are listed below for those who are experiencing literal and/or hidden homelessness in southwest Kansas.
