Addiction Counseling

Addiction is a common disease that affects individuals, families and communities. Yet, a holistic and recovery-oriented approach using a wide range of age-, gender-, cultural-, and faith-based treatments and recovery support services--specific to each individual and his or her family and friends--can help people recover physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Catholic Social Service provides addiction, recovery, and relapse prevention counseling services for individuals, couples, families and groups throughout the 28 counties of rural southwest Kansas.

Customized Treatment and Recovery

There are several options available for addiction treatment and recovery, and no single treatment is appropriate for everyone. Catholic Social Service is a faith-based outpatient treatment program. Outpatient treatment programs generally involve individual or group counseling and family therapy for individuals who visit an office at regular intervals. These programs are most convenient for people who are employed, have social support systems, and live at home or another structured setting.

Outpatient services begin with an assessment, evaluation and diagnosis of a person's individual treatment needs. Services are available for:

DUI Evaluations
SB123 Evaluations
Chemical Addiction Evaluation
Sexual Addiction Evaluation
Co-Addiction Evaluation

The initial assessment and interview will take many factors into account including the nature of the addiction, cultural background, family responsibilities, health considerations, faith/religious preferences, and more. Based on the results of the assessment, a customized treatment plan is created that may include counseling, behavior therapy, family therapy, or a combination of services, as well as addiction education and management strategies, relapse prevention strategies, and support. If the person being evaluated signs a confidentiality release, the results of the assessment may also be shared with a referring agency.

The treatment time frame is determined by the needs of the individual, and his or her ability to complete the recovery tasks so that he or she can sustain recovery. Upon completion of the program the client will be referred to self help groups for ongoing support and education.

A Spiritual Approach

In addition to respect for the dignity of each human being, the Catholic Social Service outpatient treatment program for addiction is based a model of recovery that was co-founded in 1939 by Bill W. and Dr. Bob. It includes the following 12 steps:

1. We admitted we were powerless over the addiction--that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His Will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

This spiritual-based 12-step model offers a holistic approach for addressing an individual's physical, mental, psychological, social, and spiritual needs. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Sexaholics Anonymous (SA), Al-Anon, and AlAteen, are utilized for support and for the development of a social network for recovery outside the treatment program. Some of the local support groups include: Kansas Alcoholics Anonymous, Sexaholics Anonymous of Wichita, Mid-America Region of Narcotics Anonymous, and Kansas Al-Anon/Alateen.
Referrals to Other Treatment Programs

Sometimes, outpatient treatment may include a referral to a different treatment program that can provide the most effective recovery process for the individual. Catholic Social Service works with referral sources in Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, Texas, and Arizona. Referrals may be made to some of the other treatment options listed below:
  • Medication-assisted treatment: This outpatient clinical program uses medications to help suppress a drug craving and is often used in conjunction with counseling and other behavioral therapies.
  • Short-term residential treatment: This 3 to 6 week treatment program takes place in a stand-alone, live-in facility that specializes in the treatment of drug addiction, alcoholism, and dual diagnosis of multiple issues. The treatment program is followed by participation in mutual-support groups or extended therapy.
  • Long-term residential treatment: This highly structured 6 to 12 month treatment program takes place in a center that provides 24-hr care to help people return to a drug-free lifestyle. Afterwards, transitional facilities are sometimes used before a person reintegrates into society.
  • Hospital-based rehabilitation: This treatment program is for people who have developed chronic or acute medical or psychiatric problems along with their addiction, and it takes place in a special unit of a general hospital.
  • Self-help and Mutual Aid Groups: These recovery support programs may consist of 12-step programs, support groups, self-help groups, and peer counseling groups that meet on a regular basis. Some common programs include: SMART Recovery, Nar-Anon, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and the Association of Persons Affected by Addiction.
  • On-line Support Groups and Meetings: There are many on-line groups that give individuals the opportunity to receive support and attend meetings from anywhere. Some common groups include: The Recovery Group, In The Rooms, and The Second Road.
  • Faith-based Support Groups: Spiritually based recovery support programs, such as Catholic Charities, the General Board of Church and Society of the United Methodist Church, and the Shinnyo-en Foundation, have the added support that is needed for any type of chosen treatment. Faith-based support is also available at many churches, synagogues, or other religious worship sites.
  • Other Recovery Support Services: Supplemental programs to help individuals and their families address other needs include employee-based support services and health care support
