A Statement of Clarification Regarding House Bill 2564

The Kansas Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence testified before the Kansas House Insurance Committee, February 11, 2010, in Topeka in opposition to House Bill 2564.

The Kansas Catholic Conference of Bishops supports HB 2564.  The bill has provisions to prevent abortion coverage by health insurance providers sold and purchased in the state of Kansas.

The Family Crisis Center in Great Bend, an activity of Catholic Social Service, is a member of the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence.  Catholic Social Service and the Family Crisis Center were unaware of the coalition’s position and their testimony in reference to this provision of Bill 2564.

Debbie Snapp, Executive Director of Catholic Social Service, has expressed the agency’s displeasure that testimony by the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence could be taken by some to imply support for access to abortions by a Catholic Charities organization.

Catholic Social Service (Catholic Charities for Southwest Kansas) remains committed to upholding the teaching of the Church and supporting life issues from conception to natural death.
