Heading to Washington DC.....

For nearly 15 years as the director of Catholic Social Service, I have been attending the annual gathering of Catholic Charities USA.  It is a great opportunity for me to gather with others involved in the Catholic Charities movement to learn, to share and to gain energy for the work we do.  This is a special year as we gather for the Centennial Celebration of Catholic Charities USA Saturday, September 25th through Tuesday September 28th.

This is always a great event, but this year there are some activities that I am particularly looking forward to…

  • Liturgy at the Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Saturday September 25th.

  • The opening session is with Fr. Larry Snyder, President and CEO Catholic Charities USA, as he sets the tone for the work of the agencies in these difficult economic times on Sunday September 26th.

  • Nora O’Donnell, MSMBC and Mark Shield, Washington Post and PBS, will both address the conference sharing the perspective of the national media.

  • The four directors from the Kansas Catholic Charities agencies will be meeting with the Kansas legislative delegation.  We are preparing a statewide Impact Statement to share with them.

  • Archbishop Timothy Dolan, Diocese of New York will be speaking to the group as well as Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes, President, Pontifical Council Cor Unum

Visit Catholic Charities USA to see the schedule and to the Director's Notes to follow me as I go to Washington DC to …

  • Reconnect with Catholic Charities colleagues
  • Retell the amazing stories of our predecessors
  • Reaffirm the purpose of our work
  • Realize the historic importance of this monumental occasion
  • Prepare for the vital proceedings of the next days
  • Participate in the re-creation of the historic photo taken on the steps of Catholic University of the conveners at the September 25, 1910, gathering!
